Our air conditioner seemed like it was working a lot harder than it usually does – it was constantly kicking on, running for longer periods of time, and did not seem to be blowing incredibly cold air.

I finally decided it was time to call an HVAC professional to get my air conditioning unit serviced because I was not comfortable taking the inner pieces of my unit apart. He got there the following day to perform routine maintenance and said I was exactly right – it was a dirty coil. But, it was the inside part of the coil and I was very glad I did not attempt to clean it myself because I did not have the proper tools and supplies to do so the proper way. Our HVAC technician had every product, tool and gadget you could imagine for this line of work and knew exactly what he was doing. I was thoroughly impressed and promised to be better about scheduling routine maintenance on our air conditioning unit.

We are building a new home, and in the area that we live, we experience more winter weather than we do summer weather.

Nonetheless, our kids seem to think we should install an underground pool. They have no idea the costs behind such an addition, though we do have extra money in the budget. After discussing for a few days, I think we decided we would go ahead and install the radiant flooring for our driveway because overall the cost is much less than installing a pool, and even running the heated driveway is more cost effective because it turns on and off automatically when necessary – it has a sensor for when the snow falls onto the driveway and when the temperature drops below a certain degree and there may be ice on the pavement. Now my husband and I do not have to spend hours a day out here shoveling and maintaining, or worry about the children slipping while they play in the fresh snow and run around the yard! We may even decide to install radiant flooring later down the road when we add a deck to the back of the house!

We were due for a huge hurricane in the next few days when we realized we were ill prepared – we needed a generator! We were new to hurricanes and this year’s season started early.

We rushed out to the home improvement store to gather a generator and other items we may need.

Our biggest fear was losing power because it was so darn hot and being without a functioning air conditioning system would have been unbearable. Unfortunately, the home improvement store had no backup generators with enough power that would help our air conditioning system continue to run. Several days later when the hurricane hit, of course we lost power. In an effort to be ahead of the problem, we kept the house incredibly cold for the two days prior – we had the thermostat set to 65 degrees. This didn’t help us unfortunately because within four hours of losing power, the thermostat read 79 degrees already. The storm had started to pass, but it was still incredibly windy and the power hadn’t come back on yet, too many trees had fallen down and knocked powerlines down! We could barely take it anymore, it had now been almost seven hours when finally we saw the lights flicker and heard our thermostat kick on! We were jumping for joy! In no time, our air conditioning system had cooled our house right back down to from 84 degrees to 70 degrees. We certainly learned our lesson though – always have a generator for hurricane season so you never not have air conditioning!

I have read horror stories of drip pans overflowing and the safety switch not being tripped which makes a mess of water all over peoples homes! We were incredibly lucky our unit was well maintained.
