I couldn't get anyone on the phone to confirm the sale price

The coupon was fake and we lost $96 because I gave the customer a 10% discount for free

My boss gave me a written warning on Monday morning because I gave a customer an unauthorized sale price. I’m still aggravated and tipped off about the entire situation. I went out to the country on Saturday to install a furnace for one of our residential HVAC customers. I was with the customer for several hours. After the furnace was installed, the customer presented me with a coupon. The coupon appeared to be real and our HVAC company logo and phone number appeared on the front. I tried to call my boss, but I didn’t have any cell reception at all. I even tried to call the office, but the cell service was spotty. The customer offered to let me use her phone, but I didn’t want to take any chances due to social distancing. I couldn’t get anyone on the phone to confirm the sale price, so I decided to discount the repair. I thought it was easier to give the customer a discount then lose the sale altogether. I honestly thought my boss was going to be happy with the decision that I made, but he brought me into the office on Monday morning and told me that I should have made a better decision. The coupon was fake and we lost $96 because I gave the customer a 10% discount for free. I really think that my boss was overreacting, especially since he can contact the customer and take it up with them. I would never say that to his face. After all, the guy signs his name to my paychecks.
