The technology has improved on HVAC systems, but some problems remain the same

I was fortunate enough to have an air conditioner as a child growing up in an inner city where A/Cs were not the norm.

Though our air conditioners were never brand new they were efficient, and I was able to enjoy comfortable sleep during the nights.

Back then, the technology on the window air conditioners were nowhere near as advanced or innovative as they are today. There were no digital screens to control the temperature, instead we had knobs that didn’t provide many options, high cool, medium cool, and low cool as well as options to simply run the fan. I was used to my A/C being a bit noisy, but I didn’t mind the noise as long as I was comfortable, that was the most important thing to me. However, one night I noticed the air conditioner didn’t sound the same, the constant buzzing noise became more erratic and quieter, and the unit was not blowing any cold air. My dad investigated and found that the A/C had frozen because I had the knob set on high. He unplugged the A/C and after a few hours, it defrosted and was working again. Up until that point, I had no idea that a window air conditioner could freeze. Just like old window units, modern A/Cs can freeze as well. A few reasons include but are not limited to the unit is low on freon, there is a lack of proper airflow or perhaps the unit has dirty coils. If you ever have an issue with your air conditioner freezing, it is wise to contact an HVAC service technician immediately to avoid major damage and high repair costs. Unlike my old window A/C unplugging the HVAC system will not fix the problem.
