Why it is important to pay attention to the noise coming from your HVAC unit

One morning while on my way to work, I noticed a weird noise coming from my engine and the temperature gauge on my car began to rise higher than I had seen before.

My instinct told me to pull over because the last thing I needed was an engine that overheated and exploded into flames.

I pulled over and called the dealership and my service representative was alarmed, and he advised me to have the car towed over immediately. I obliged and upon inspection they discovered that I had a faulty radiator, and that could have been a major issue had I continued to drive. A similar incident happened with my HVAC unit. Last Summer, as I sat outside in the backyard, I noticed a weird noise coming from my air conditioner. I can’t explain what it was, perhaps a rattling, but it was a noise that was unfamiliar to me. The A/C was still running, and nothing seemed awry, but I kept my ears and eyes open and sure enough, later that evening, the A/C stopped cooling my house. I immediately called my HVAC technician, and he was able to put me on the schedule for the next day. He diagnosed the problem as a faulty capacitor, and he replaced the part and said I should be good to go. Well, he was right, except a month later, I heard a different rattling noise. Apparently, this time the fan motor burned out and that could have caused a major fire. My HVAC service technician commended me for acting so quickly, and though this issue was costly, he said I potentially prevented a bigger catastrophe. Just like my car, I have learned to pay attention to the different sounds that my HVAC unit makes, it could potentially save me from major equipment repair costs.
