Smart thermostat is kindof dumb

Okay, so I think we need to lay some ground rules for this new “smart device” trend that started about ten years ago.

Remember back then, when things were so simple? The only “smart” anything we had was the iphone, followed by a few copycat devices that were clearly inferior when it came to digital intelligence.

There weren’t smart speakers, smart surveillance systems, smart switches, smart lights, and smart “god knows what else” that have become widely available these days. I feel like the label doesn’t even apply most of the time, and there are limited standards for what makes these things so intelligent. My smart thermostat, for example, is no genius. I’ve had the stupid thing for about six months, and I’ve never felt like my indoor air quality was so poorly managed before this period. Even my plain old dial thermostat was smarter than this – at least that old air temperature control fossil could keep a steady indoor air temperature! My 30 year old programmable thermostat was capable to follow basic heating and cooling instructions! This brand new, space age thermostat, on the other hand, does nothing for me. Every day it seems to improvise a new temperature control program without any instruction to do so. It’s like this thing has a penchant for turning the heating and cooling systems on and off as often as possible. One moment there’s hot air coming out of the vents, the next moment it’s cool air. Rarely is the indoor air temperature consistent, and I’ve never noticed a logical temperature control plan thanks to the brilliant thermostat. I’m just saying, our AC and furnace both running over the course of one day can’t possibly be considered smart.
