I do not want to be caught with my pants down when there is an unexpected emergency that requires money. It is not really a nice option to go into debt when you have an unpredictable emergency come up. This is why I do my best to keep a decent amount of money on hand at all times. However, sometimes it makes me live rather uncomfortably..; Like my central heating, cooling, and air quality control systems is not working right. For the past few months our a/c component has not been functioning at full capacity. I have known that the error handling component needed a professional diagnostic appointment and potentially a full-blown repair. Hell, there is even a chance that the cooling component is going to need to be fully upgraded by a professional heating, cooling, and air quality control professional. With all of these financial problems in mind, I have been waiting to pull the trigger on my heating, cooling, and air quality control issue. I know that one of these days our normal heating and cooling dealership is going to have a service discount available for routine heating and A/C services. It’s also only a matter of time before a/c units are finally clearanced for the year. I don’t want to pay any more money than I need to for our professional heating and A/C inspection or the potential heating and cooling upgrade. Therefore, I will suffer for the sake of saving.

My husband is a cheapskate.

We used a refrigerator for two years after the handle broke off the door because it still cooled. He has piles of used screws and nails. He never throws anything out and he refuses to spend money if we don’t have to. And he is always looking for a deal. He won’t even pay money for routine HVAC maintenance. He insists on waiting until something goes wrong. Well, this time something went wrong and he insisted on waiting for a sale to have the HVAC unit looked at! Talk about a cheapskate! We live in a subtropical area, and like a lot of other people and businesses around here, we have central heat and air conditioning provided by a self contained unit outside our house, near the back door. I noticed several months back that the humming sound it makes sounded different and the force of the air from the vents wasn’t as strong as it used to be. I mentioned this problem to my husband and he told me that we would have the HVAC unit looked at when a local HVAC company has a sale on services. I’ve been watching for local sales and we ended up waiting three months. The air conditioning barely worked by then. The HVAC technician that came out explained what was wrong with it, and his explanation went right over my head. But, the point was, because we put off getting the HVAC repaired, it was now too late to repair it and we needed a whole new HVAC unit.

The courtroom scenes in the 1962 epic movie “To Kill a Mockingbird”, gives a glimpse of courtrooms before HVAC. People are fanning themselves with paper fans, beads of sweat are on people’s foreheads, and there is even a “pot-belly” stove used to heat the courtroom during winter. The issue of courtroom HVAC has caught the attention of the federal government. A 79-page report released by the Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) in 2018 is titled: Prototype Courthouse Building Energy Model: Building and System Characteristics. Section 3 of the report is dedicated to courthouse HVAC system characteristics. Heating source and heating equipment, cooling system types, and air handling unit types are topics covered. There are several reasons why maintaining a comfortable courtroom environment is important other than the comfort of those attending the legal proceedings. One is preventing incidents like what happened in an Indiana courtroom where a superior court judge discovered mold on the American flag in the witness stand caused by excess humidity. The Covid-19 pandemic has added to the urgency of having clean air at court proceedings. A failure to resolve those issues can bring the wheels of justice to a grinding halt. Finally, an important verdict could be overturned if a clever defense can prove that the courtroom’s HVAC system prevented a fair trial. There may already be a precedent for just that situation.

If HVAC was a religion, then the year 1902 when Willis Carrier was credited with the invention of the air conditioner, would be the year 0 to true devotees.

They could still use the Gregorian Calendar but would refer to the years before Carrier’s invention as “before Carrier” or BC.

The birth of Jesus would be 1902 BC, the battle of Hastings would change from 1066 AD to 836 BC, and the American Civil War years would change to 41 to 37 BC. And just like those that came before Jesus, many people came before Carrier. There was a Chinese inventor named Ding Huane from the 2nd century AD (18th century BC in the HVAC dating system) who created a human-powered rotary fan. Much later in the 18th century (2nd century HVAC BC), American founding father Benjamin Franklin and a chemistry professor from Cambridge University named John Hadley experimented with alcohol and ether to find a method of rapid cooling using evaporation. Benjamin noticed that the sweat-drenched shirt he was wearing felt cool in a breeze. From this incident, the two men lowered the temperature of a thermometer bulb dipped in a solvent to where a layer of ice formed. Other developments followed in the 19th century (1st century HVAC BC). Most notable were those of scientist Michael Faraday who experimented using liquefied ammonia, the first widely used refrigerant. In Florida, American physician John Gorrie used compression to create ice for patients in hospitals. HVAC is not a religious sect so there is no need to bow in prayer to Willis Carrier and learn new dates for historical events. But no one can deny that HVAC is a miracle worthy of being called biblical for its impact on humanity.
