Sometimes people really make me laugh.

They get so worked up and start looking for big problems to explain their rather small issues.

This is something that I’ve seen time and time again in my own friends and family, but it’s still always pretty funny. I was recently this was happening with my good friend who couldn’t figure out why her house was so hot and humid every single day. She lives in the South and couldn’t understand why her Central AC wasn’t taking care of her hot and sticky indoor air. She said that she kept in the thermostat set at an easy 72° everyday, just like she did back home, but somehow the AC did not work well in the south. I asked if she really thought that her air conditioner was in capable of operating as efficiently due to the lower latitudes, and she adamantly insisted. I recommended several times that she just have a designated HVAC technician come out and inspect the AC unit to find out if there was a problem with its operations, but my friend didn’t want to spend the money. Instead she continued living with subpar AC in her house and using box fans to create some breeze in her indoor space. I thought this was a strange inexpensive way to keep doing things, but I couldn’t stop her from beating the crap out of her own HVAC system. After several months of hearing about the hot and humid conditions she was living in, I finally went to visit one day. As soon as I walked in her house I was startled by the amount of furniture she had acquired. I took a look around and then had to stop and ask her… Have you considered the fact that all of your air vents are currently blocked by furniture?

If you’re anything like me you really enjoy getting out into nature and experiencing all of the beauty that it has to offer. I’m not only talking about looking around and seeing the gorgeous trees and rocks all around. I’m talking about enjoying it with all of your senses. Obviously the sounds of nature are extremely calming and peaceful, such as rainfall or a babbling brook. But we should also talk about the feel and smell of the air when you’re in The Great Outdoors. I don’t think enough people enjoy the natural ventilation as much as they should. There’s nothing that I enjoy more than waking up early and going on it quick hike up my local mountain. As soon as I get outside and fill my lungs with the fresh and cool air of Summer mornings I feel amazing about life. There’s just nothing like it. Especially when we’re talking about the air quality that you experienced inside in the summer. In comparison, there is no doubt that the outdoor air is much healthier for you. What am I talking about? I’m talking about how stale and stagnant your air conditioned air is. When you spend the entire summer pumping AC into your home, eventually the air gets stale. There isn’t any exchange of indoor air for fresh outdoor air, so you just cycle the same treated air through your house day after day. Recently I was really happy to learn about heat return vents. They work to circumvent this stale indoor air issue. The purpose of the heat return vent, or HRV, is to replace the volume of indoor air with outdoor air. This way your house will never get so stale that you forget what fresh mountain air even feels like.

I’ve been a pretty healthy human being for my entire life.

• In fact, I’ve never even been in the hospital.

I’ve never had a major surgery, I’ve never broken a bone, and I’ve never had weird illnesses that required me to be held up in a medical facility. Thank God I haven’t had to endure all of that stress. Well, I should say I didn’t have to… Until now. out of the blue, the past year has been full of medical mysteries in my world. All of a sudden my body you rebelled against me. The biggest problems are in my chest and head. It feels like every single day I wake up with the worst head cold of my entire life. My sinuses are constantly inflamed, my nose is always running, I’ve been hacking out a long for well over a year now, and frankly I can’t even breathe some days. I’ve been going to doctor after doctor trying to figure out what is going on with my respiratory health, but no one has been helping. Finally I figured out what needed to be done all on my own. I was in the attic poking around one day and happen to jostle the air duct hanging overhead. As the piece of metal swung around dust and debris went flying everywhere… and it shocked me. It seems like all of this dirt and nasty garbage was falling straight out of the air duct as I stared at it. It was in that moment that I realized I had no idea if the air ducts had ever been cleaned before. The prior owners didn’t do a great job caring for the house. Why would I have taken care of the air ducts? I called my HVAC company immediately and had the air ducts scrubbed out within the week. I’m happy to report that I can breathe easily again.

These days my budget is not flexible.

Prior to this I was able to live pretty freely with my salaried position.

I had free rent, and so I was able to spend all of my money on repaying student loans and pursuing some of my new hobbies. However, all good things must come to an end. These days I’m living on my own and I have a lot of expenses to consider each month – my heating and cooling is definitely one of them. I’m staying in a small apartment where I have to cover all of the utility bills on my own, so one of my biggest passion these days is finding new innovative ways to cut down on energy costs. Sometimes this means living a pretty simple life, but honestly I don’t miss all of the perks that I used to spend on. Right now I’m focused on lowering my energy bills as much as possible. I spend a lot of time alone in the dark. I also tend to keep the windows open so that I don’t have to use the HVAC system quite so often. I’ll be honest, it’s really hot out. There are some days that opening the windows feels like taking a plunge into the hot humid depths of Hell. However it’s still better than my old living circumstances were. Even though I can’t run the AC continually day and night like I used to, I’m still feeling a lot better. Maybe it’s due to the fresh air that I’m letting in instead of running my air conditioner.

Have you ever been on a really long uncomfortable road trip before? If so I’m really sorry.

I know that they can either be really great or really terrible, depending on the circumstances.

I personally have been on both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes the road trips that I embark on are the most fun times of my life. Other times the road trips have been the most miserable experiences I’ve ever endured. It’s sort of luck of the draw. Actually, I have to say it’s the luck of the car choice. For me nothing makes a better trip than having a comfortable ride while you’re flying down the open road. I don’t need much really, just the basics. A working radio station, or a Bluetooth connection so we can stream podcasts, helps a whole lot. Another thing that I can’t stand is having a broken HVAC in the car. If you somehow get stuck with an on-board thermostat or heating and cooling system that operates below traditional standards, you’re in for a long trip. Most recently, this happened to me when I set out in a friend’s minivan. About 10 minutes into the trip, I realized that the air was feeling pretty stagnant in the warm. I asked her what was going on, and she recommended that we roll down the windows for a while. I thought that was a strange request, considering it was 95 degrees outside, but I went ahead and let some fresh air into the vehicle. Of course this mostly made it harder. Another half an hour in, I politely asked if there was a chance that we could start up that AC. That’s when she turned her head slowly in my direction and said the words I never wanted to hear, there is no AC.

My mom has to be one of the least high maintenance people on earth. She will make do with basically anything. It does not take much for her to get by. In fact, her entire life she has barely spent a dime on herself. This goes beyond purchasing new clothes or accessories. Truly, she won’t treat herself to anything. It’s been this way for as long as I can possibly remember. She was always taking care of her kids and husband, as well as a house full of animals, before herself. That’s why my brothers and I decided to go ahead and get her a brand new HVAC system as a surprise. Instead of giving her the option to pitch a fit for hiring a knowledgeable HVAC technician, we thought it would be best to just lore her out of the house. We had of the HVAC technician come in tear out her old heating and cooling system and a whole team of HVAC certified installation experts arrived to install the new air temperature control set up. We got her a brand new energy star rated air conditioner, zone control heating, and a smart thermostat to operate all of her new HVAC equipment. Since she’s not going to taking care of herself we also signed her up for five years of HVAC service contracts. Now there’s no excuse for her to live in subpar conditions are to be uncomfortable every day of her life and a cold and drafty house. My mom might not take the initiative to get a new HVAC system for herself, but at least her kids want her to live in the best indoor condition as possible.

It’s finally here – the miserable and sticky summer of the deep south.

People are slowing down, and time is following suit.

No one is where they say they’ll be when you expect them anymore. Everyone is moving in slo-mo to avoid working up more body heat than necessary from the extra exertion. Traffic is slower, checking out at the store is more costly of your time, and even conversations have slowed to a crawl. It’s pretty funny to me how the human species copes with extreme heat. I suppose it’s just an animal condition that we haven’t outgrown with all our fancy industry and technological advances. At the end of the day, you still need to go outside. There are certain animals that I expect to be affected by the heat, but cats really are not one of them. Dogs, of course, get lazy and reliant on loads of cool fresh water when the temperature climbs. You’ll see wild animals like birds and squirrels chilling out lazily or diving into puddles of water for relief on sunshiney days. But it’s pretty rare that you’ll see a cat avoiding the sun or panting from the heat, you know? For me, that’s the real indicator of a dangerously hot day. When Garfield is over the sunshine, so am I. I’m loading up with layers of sunscreen, layers of flowing clothing, floppy hats, and sunglasses. And after all that, I’m not going outside unless I absolutely have to. As far as I’m concerned, there isn’t enough sunscreen in the world to offset the pounding sun and miserable humidity on those cat days of summer.
